Considerable time and effort is going into the debate over what is proper posting etiquette/style/intention/etc. The SCP forum is definitely not alone in facing this challenge. It's always tough to balance free discussion with personal testimonials and requests for advice and, the thorny subject of offering items for sale.

I came across a forum that is trying to address this common problem in a new way. Though the topics discussed on this forum aren't automotive-related, the admins of SCP's forum may want to take a look at this link: http://www.globalspear.com/content/4-read-me-prior-registration.html

Some excerpts:
"As some of you may have noticed this is not your normal website where you can simply make posts and expect people to believe who is on the other end of a screen name. The reoccurring theme here is credibility. We will not have anyone hide behind some arbitrary screen name and make false claims!

The main goal of Global Spear to provide credibility to not only what is being said, but also who is saying it. To achieve this there are several measures we have taken to vet who is posting and their credentials.

"Everyone that registers to GobalSpear will be afforded the opportunity to join in discussions about virtually anything. However, do not expect some to take you very serious if claiming to be a “tactics expert” and yet you never served in the Military or LEO. Even then unless you fulfilled certain jobs or positions you may not be the SME (Subject Matter Expert) you think you are. With GlobalSpear, we will make sure that if someone is claiming to be something, they are really are that.

In the interest of saving valuable space, you can read more at the Global Spear site itself. And the SCP Board admins & officers can read it at length and evaluate the suitability of those measures for our particular situation.

I am just sharing this tidbit for whatever it is worth.

Cheers everyone!  Grin

in line with this, it may be of use to look into Elbert's suggestion to bring back allowing the viewing of other people's profiles. this used to be allowed here.

I don't think I put ANYTHING in my profile.   Puwede ba yun?

Pero I take EVERYTHING with a healthy dose of salt unless either sure ako or calculated risk.

Di ba there was talk of vendor-member and non-vendor member classification?  Wala na ba yun?

How come you guys (raf & sotz) only have 1 star under your names while two-niner has lots with fewer posts?  Buggy na ba our software?

Re: profiles

profiles will also show posts by that user. this will allow the reader to see the line of thinking of that poster and help judge the content of the curent post that he is reading. if its posted, no need to hide it.

I agree with the suggestion of Elbert that forumers be allowed to view the profile of any poster to assess the credibility of what is being said and possible persuasion of the poster.  Privacy should not be an issue since registered forumers always have the option to limit or only share personal information and credential they are comfortable with.

I remember being new to this forum and lurking for some information on the FXT, I saw a thread and several posts that interest me.  Being new then and didn't know the personalities behind the handles, I was hesitant to send a private message to inquire as I too was unsure if I was going to get a response.  Even if I did get a response, the merit of the information shared was always going to be questionable in my mind.   Elated to see the profile icon below the name of the poster, I instinctively clicked on it but needless to say I coudn't get any information.

Like in most things as Pup2 says, one must always take what is being said with a "healthy dose of salt" and digestion is always our choice to make.

So a definite +1 on access to profile.
